Youth Arrested for Alleged Mungiki Ties Spark Musical Chaos at Nyeri Police HQ
Chaos ensued at Divisional Police Headquarters in Nyeri as youth who were arrested on Sunday over suspicion of being members outlawed Mungiki Sect began singing traditional songs inside the cells.
In a video circulated online, the suspects sang vernacular proverbs, which were interpreted to agitate for freedom and solidarity.
Other parts of the song also addressed the challenges they were experiencing in their lives.
In the video, the suspects’ fervor captivated visitors, who were attracted to the traditional songs being performed.
On the last day of 2023, Sunday, December 31st, more than 290 individuals were apprehended in Nyeri Town on allegations of belonging to the banned Mungiki group.
Law enforcement set up checkpoints along multiple highways to discourage followers from participating in the scheduled gathering arranged by the contentious politician Maina Njenga.

Per Nyeri County Police Commissioner Pius Murugu, the scheduled gathering has been prohibited due to its unlawful nature.
The increased scrutiny of young people follows Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s commitment to combat the revival of the organization.
Recently, he has been firm in his stance that the government will not accept the revival of the group in the weeks gone by.
Nevertheless, Maina Njenga, a previous and transformed head of the banned organization, denied claims of its comeback and urged for solidarity.
“The meeting had been silently called off, and the youths who were arrested had only come to see who was coming to town,” Njenga stated, adding that he was ready to meet Gachagua and other Mt Kenya leaders.
In the interim, the young individuals apprehended for intending to participate in Maina Njenga’s gathering were brought before the Nyeri Central Police Station on Tuesday, January 2nd.
