‘Reduce Your Appetite For Taxation In 2024,’ Raila Tells President Ruto

Raila Odinga, the leader of the One Kenya coalition party within the Azimio la Umoja alliance, has urged President William Ruto to diminish his inclination toward taxation and lower the country’s living expenses. This statement appears to be a response to the President’s New Year’s message.

Addressing the crowd at Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega County on Monday, the opposition leader acknowledged the challenging year Kenyans have faced due to economic difficulties. He urged the Kenya Kwanza administration to halt excessive executive spending and curb wastage as a gesture of goodwill to the people for the upcoming New Year.

Mr. Odinga persisted in his criticism of what he describes as an excessively burdensome tax system. He pledged to increase efforts to urge the government to reduce taxes that, according to him, have caused essential items like groceries and fuel to become unmanageably expensive.

The ex-prime minister detailed a set of suggestions that the opposition plans to embrace in the upcoming year to control what he described as the government’s desire for increased taxes. This includes the potential revival of widespread protests to pressure the government into reevaluating its contentious policies.

He mentioned that it’s about time the government starts listening to the concerns of Kenyan citizens instead of ignoring them. He pledged that the excessive taxation system observed in the country over the past year must be halted.

โ€œTunataka kuona mwaka huu 2024 ikiwa mzuri kuliko ile ya 2023. Tunataka ushuru ishuke na gharama ya maisha irudi chini,โ€ said Mr. Odinga.

He promised to establish a comprehensive movement against taxes aimed at implementing budget reductions, enabling Kenyans to retain a larger portion of their earnings. Additionally, he stated that if the Kenya Kwanza administration doesn’t eliminate the Finance Act, of 2023, the opposition is prepared to restart street protests against the government without hesitation.

โ€œZakayo awache kutoza watu ushuru…Zakayo ashuke…akuje hapa chini pamoja na sisi,โ€ added the Azimio chief.

Joined by fellow opposition figures at Bukhungu stadium while overseeing the Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa Cup finals, Mr. Odinga utilized the moment to advocate for changes in the administration of football matters within the nation.

He criticized the government for overlooking sports talents within the nation, stating that despite Kakamega being a hub for football talent, it has been ignored by the Ministry of Sports.
