Fierce Shootout as Cornered KDF Battle Militants in Mandera Camp

A military camp in Mandera County was attacked by a group of 20 suspected Al-Shabaab militants on Friday afternoon.

According to a police report obtained by Kenyans.co.ke, the militants approached the Quick Response Unit (QRU) Alunga camp in Lafey Sub-County in the northwest direction

Minutes later, they ambushed the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldiers and fired rounds of AK 47 rifles, several bombs as well as Rocket-Propelled Grenade (RPGs) reinforced with PKM guns.

In response, the officers fired back at the militants, engaging the gunmen for 15 minutes at the camp.

Following the melee, the al-Shabaab gunmen retreated as the officers successfully repelled them.

Per the report, the officers escaped the incident unscathed after everyone was accounted for. Officers have since launched investigations to unearth the identity of the militants and bring them to book.

The incident comes as the government has been ramping up its efforts in the fight against terrorism.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki has in the past assured Kenyans that the government will not relent in bringing the crisis to an end.

He, however, confirmed that the government would not harm its citizens in the process.

This is after concerns were raised by Garissa locals in the abduction of residents.

“The government will not be involved in the abductions of its citizens,” he stated in November 2023.

“We will fight terrorists without hurting our people and that is why we have been engaging elected leaders. Our police have assured us that the fight against terrorism will not be used to harass our youth,” he added.
