Public Service Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has vehemently opposed the idea of vying for the Kiambu governor position again.

During an interview with KTN, Kuria wondered how he is expected to step down from a position at the Cabinet to pursue county affairs.

“Never never. How can I leave this state called Kenya for Kiambu again?” he asked.

Recalling his loss during the August 9, 2022, general elections, Kuria said he was grateful for the votes he garnered, maintaining that he would not vie for the position ever again.

“I presented myself to the Kiambu people and they were very generous with 24,000 votes out of 1.3 million registered voters. I am grateful for that,” he said.

“I sold my manifesto for them. Most of the things I did not state, you know I was part of both manifestos; national and my own for the Kiambu people. But now I have a fantastic opportunity to drive change not just for the Kiambu people but also the others in this country.”

Kuria, who has served under two ministries since he was first appointed as a Cabinet Secretary, lost the seat to Kimani Wamatangi.

On August 9, 2022, before the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission announced the final results for any seat, he conceded defeat and announced that he was heading back to the private sector after eight years of service as MP.

“I enjoyed every minute of my eight years in elective politics. Back to the private sector. Happily,” Kuria said.

Before then, Kuria had said he would exit politics if he failed to clinch the Kiambu governor seat at the polls.

“In the unlikely event I’m not elected, you will not see me in politics again let alone seeking to be nominated. There is life beyond politics,” Kuria said in a previous Facebook post on July 12, 2022.

A month after losing the seat, Kuria was appointed to Cabinet by President William Ruto, as the Trade and Industry CS.

Eleven months later in October 2023, Ruto made a reshuffle to his cabinet, moving various CSs including Kuria.

Kuria is currently at the Ministry of Public Service, Performance, and Delivery Management.

During the KTN interview, the CS denied claims that this was a demotion.

“This is work of coordinating, ensuring we are on track for all projects including those in trade. So it is prosperous,” he said.

“Now I am in charge of trade, water, housing… delivering. How can that be a demotion?”
