The ODPP has replied to allegations stating that it declined to offer guidance regarding the situation involving Daniel Muthiani Benard, a Meru blogger recognized as Sniper, who was abducted and killed.

As per the statements from Renson Mulele’s office, despite social media accusations targeting the authorities, it is affirmed that the public prosecutor fulfilled their responsibilities correctly. Currently, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) holds the responsibility to proceed further.

“Because the whereabouts of the abducted person were unknown, the DCI, through the ODPP applied criminal miscellaneous application no. E116 of 2023 seeking custodial orders pending completion of investigations,” ODDP said.

Moreover, as per the prosecutor, the court in Maua, Meru county, opted against issuing custodial orders and instead released the accused individual on a cash bond of Ksh20,000.

However, as per the ODDP, following the discovery of Sniper’s body, it instructed the DCI to immediately commence investigating the heinous crime and to promptly submit the resulting inquiry file for assessment and direction.

“The ODPP has not received the inquiry file into the offense of murder up to date,” ODPP said, indicating DCI is to blame for the same.

The announcement comes after Denis Itumbi, a State House blogger, pointed fingers, alleging that the ODPP has refused to look into the murder of Sniper.

“So, a SUSPECT in the abduction of SNIPER was arrested, but ODPP did NOT give directions on how to proceed. DCI told the court they were waiting for DPP. Why the delay Mr. DPP? Why is DPP silent internally and publicly?” Itumbi questioned.

Vincent Muriithi Kirimi, who also goes by the alias Supuu wa Mioro, is the primary individual suspected of being involved in the kidnapping and killing of Sniper.

Kirimi was taken into custody after Sniper went missing but was later freed after paying a KSh20,000 bail while authorities continued to look for the blogger.
