I did not support Ruto to secure my return to Kenya – Miguna

Lawyer Miguna Miguna has dismissed reports that he supported President William Ruto ahead of the August 2022 elections to secure his return to Kenya.

He said the idea that he supported Ruto in exchange for returning to his motherland is a “sick joke” and must be rejected.

“I never lost my rights of citizenship. My return was not a gift. I am exercising my rights without fear,” he said on X.

A local daily had said the ‘marriage’ between Ruto and Muguna had collapsed following the lawyer’s recent criticism of the Kenya Kwanza administration.

“I’m married to one woman,” Miguna stated.

Miguna returned to Kenya on October 20, 2022, after being in exile for over four years.

The opposition figure was deported by the government of retired President Uhuru Kenyatta after hotly contested elections in which Miguna supported Raila Odinga.

Officials said Miguna was arrested for membership in the opposition National Resistance Movement (NRM) of which he had earlier proclaimed himself a “general”.

A court ruled that the police had disobeyed court orders by holding Miguna. The High Court Justice Dennis Wakiaga ordered his immediate release on a cash bail of $500.

A day later in February 2018, Miguna was deported to Canada.

Miguna returned to Kenya on October 20, 2022, shortly after President William Ruto took power on September 13, 2022.

Upon arrival at the JKIA, Miguna extended gratitude to all Kenyans who stood with him, the judiciary, and Ruto whom he also thanked saying, “Without this administration, I would not be back home”.
