5 High Profile Robberies That Shocked the Nation in 2023

During the course of this year, numerous prominent individuals from Kenya fell prey to robberies, occasionally involving weapons, resulting in the loss of valuable belongings.

Two key figures in the government, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi and his counterpart in the Gender Ministry, Aisha Jumwa, were affected by the events.

Here is a list of the five robberies that rocked the country in 2023.

    Musalia Mudavadi home

At the beginning of the year, it was reported that two individuals unlawfully entered the residence of Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi in Karen and took a gas cylinder along with a Samsung television set.

Video from the security cameras at the residence of the Prime CS revealed that two unknown men entered the premises by scaling the perimeter wall at approximately 4:30 pm.

As per the findings in the report from a forensic audit of the video footage, it was determined that one of the burglars obstructed a CCTV camera at Mudavadi’s residence by using a plastic item, thereby preventing it from capturing the identities of the trespassers.

The items that were lost were subsequently found by a staff member on the premises. Mudavadi’s son informed the authorities about the incident.

    Aisha Jumwa home

In another alarming event, three thieves reportedly assaulted the home of Aisha Jumwa, the Gender Cabinet Secretary, in Loresho, Nairobi County, on February 16th.

The thieves allegedly escaped with Ksh1 million in cash, along with a mobile phone, a laptop, and some jewelry.

Per the security team stationed at the CS’s residence, the burglars forcefully entered by slicing a part of the boundary wall. They proceeded directly to Jumwa’s room and took a jewelry container.

Subsequently, they looted her daughter’s room and took the money and phones. One of CS Jumwa’s daughters sustained injuries in the confrontation.

    Bomet Supermarket Robbery

In May, security camera footage at a supermarket in Bomet revealed a group of armed individuals entering the store aggressively and shouting at customers.

In the video, the thieves were observed firing randomly while shoppers hurried to find safety.

The robbers also accosted the cashier and stole the supermarketโ€™s earnings for the day in just a few minutes.

After robbing the supermarket, the two-member gang shot in the air as a warning and slithered into darkness. It was, however, unclear how much they made away with.

    Police officer hiding in Bank

A police officer was arrested in Ruiru Town, Kiambu County, after allegedly trying to rob a Mpesa shop.

Ruiru police boss Alex Shikondi told the press that the suspect, an inspector, had robbed the Mpesa Ksh54,000.

Wails by the shop’s attendant, however, attracted members of the public who thwarted the attack, after which they bayed for the officerโ€™s blood.

Sensing the danger that was coming his way, the officer ran into a bank within the town for safety.

He would later be arrested by police officers attached to the branch.

    Intruders Looting Uhuru Land

At the beginning of this year, the former first family incurred losses after intruders stormed President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Northlands ranch and cut down trees.

The group also stole a rare breed of sheep and set a section of the property on fire. This was significant since the property hosts both Brookside Dairy offices and a processing plant.

The gang stormed the farm wielding machetes and power saws.

At the time, some politicians from the ruling UDA party had accused the former President of bankrolling Azimioโ€™s anti-government protests which were threatening the nationโ€™s stability.
