Gachagua To Kenyan Diaspora: Bring Your Money But Don’t Come Back To Kenya Just Yet

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has encouraged Kenyans living abroad to consider investing their earnings in Kenya instead of immediately returning home, citing the country’s existing challenges with unemployment.

He addressed attendees on Friday during the conclusion of a three-day Diaspora Investment Conference held at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) in Nairobi.

Gachagua said, โ€œEast or West, home is best. At the end of it all, let us not pretend: it is the desire of every Kenyan working out there to one day come back home and retire here, but you must prepare for that retirement. You don’t want to come back and find it (the country) the way you left it.โ€

He continued, โ€œPlease put money here, but don’t come yourself; we don’t need you here right nowโ€ฆwe have enough problems with employment we want you to stay out there, but we want you to send money hereโ€ฆ you’ll come back home eventually but not now.โ€

The theme of the second annual Kenya Diaspora Investment Conference (KDIC) was Tujenge Kenya; Bridging Borders, Building Futures.

The conference’s goal was to showcase and introduce investment prospects in different sectors of the economy to the diaspora community members.

President William Ruto opened the conference on Wednesday.

He mentioned that the government acknowledges the contribution of the Kenyan diaspora to the country’s economic advancement.

He mentioned that the government highly values its expatriate citizens and acknowledges the strong connections they uphold with their home country.

President Ruto expressed the government’s acknowledgment, gratitude, and praise for the Kenyan diaspora’s contributions to emancipating, democratizing, and internationalizing the nation’s economy.

Simultaneously, Ruto promised Kenyan expatriates safety in their adopted nations while encouraging their engagement in the socio-economic progress of their homeland.

“As a government, the security and safety of all citizens is our foremost commitment and most fundamental obligation, without which every other endeavor, including investment, is not possible,” said President Ruto.
