Kenya has secured a prominent position within the United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS by assuming the role of Chair for the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS for 2024.

During the 53rd session of the UNAIDS Programme Coordinating Board in Geneva, Switzerland, Kenya was chosen for this role.

On Friday, December 15, Health Cabinet Secretary Nakhumicha conveyed in a statement that Kenya’s capability to address HIV/AIDS will grant the country authority in decision-making, both domestically and globally.

The Health Cabinet Secretary mentioned that Kenya intends to intensify its initiatives to raise awareness and enhance the availability of treatment across the nation.

โ€œAs we embrace the responsibility to drive this impactful change, we will intensify prevention efforts, expand access to treatment, activate awareness and sensitization campaigns as well as champion inclusively as we focus on building a future where HIV/AIDs is not a threat to our communitiesโ€, her statement read in part.

Ruth Laibon Masha, presently serving as the Chief Executive Officer at Kenya’s National Syndemic Diseases Control Council (NSDCC), formerly known as the National AIDS Control Council, represented Kenya at the summit.

UNAIDS represents a groundbreaking collaboration among various branches of the United Nations, merging the contributions and assets of 11 UN entities to rally the global community in the fight against AIDS. These include UNHCR, UNICEF, WFP, UNDP, UNFPA, UNODC, UN Women, ILO, UNESCO, WHO, and the World Bank.

As the head of the United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS, Kenya is tasked with leading the Programme Coordinating Board (PCB), which serves as the governing entity responsible for overseeing policy, strategy, finance, monitoring, and evaluation related to UNAIDS programmatic matters.

The PCB includes 22 Member States chosen from the Cosponsoring Organisations’ member states, elected to represent different regions, and allocated seats accordingly.

The Chair’s responsibility involves overseeing meetings, serving as an impartial facilitator of the Board, and ensuring fair representation of different perspectives during discussions.

The Chair also has the responsibility to ensure that the decisions made are by the Board’s principle of decision-making.
