Kisii Burial Standoff: Villagers Shun Nairobi Family, Leave Visitors to Dig Grave

There was drama at a funeral ceremony in Kioomooncha, Marani Sub County Kisii County, after the local grave diggers refused to dig the grave of a deceased.

This forced visitors to dig the grave so that the ceremony could end in peace.

The decision of the village grave diggers was supported by other villagers, who accused the family of the deceased of failing to attend other people’s funerals, Harambee, and other events in the village and only showing up when it was their loved one who had passed on.

“Nowadays, it is tit for tat, if you do not attend other people’s funerals, nobody will participate in yours either,” a villager told PoliticalPulseChat.

Those who spoke at the funeral urged those living in Nairobi and other towns to fully participate in village activities by physical attendance and in monetary terms.

“There are some people who have disappeared in Nairobi and other towns and they think that we will just support them when they or their relatives die,” Joyce Siro, a village elder said.

Adding, “Such people will be left on their own when such a time arrives.”

In another incident, a man from the same village who works and lives in Nairobi was left on his own when his mother died.

Villagers refused to accord any form of support. Even the grave digging was done by visitors.

The reason given was that the man and his siblings had not contributed to other funerals and events in the village.

After the ordeal, the man is said to have started making amends by participating in village welfare activities.

“I would not want the scene of the last time to be repeated to me or my siblings, hence; I will do everything I can to avoid it,” the man, who chose to remain anonymous, told Wananchi Reporting.
