Azimio Sues Speaker Wetangula for Favouring Sabina Chege

The Azimio coalition has taken legal action against National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula for allegedly showing bias towards nominated Member of Parliament Sabina Chege and acknowledging her as the Jubilee Party Whip.

In the legal case brought forth by former Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya, Azimio seeks to have the Jubilee Party acknowledged as remaining part of the opposition alliance.

Therefore, Azimio, headed by Raila Odinga, urges the National Assembly Speaker not to acknowledge Jubilee as a parliamentary party.

The opposition coalition contends that this action would essentially weaken the agreements made among political parties within the coalition.

In the legal case, Azimio noted that the internal disputes within Jubilee, leading to a splinter group led by Sabina Chege, were issues that could potentially be resolved through a National Delegates Conference.

Due to the absence of a National Delegates Conference (NDC) to address the internal conflicts, Azimio criticized Wetangula for allegedly showing bias toward the faction that has decided to collaborate with the Kenya Kwanza alliance under President William Ruto’s leadership.

“I have been further advised that the Speaker’s decision (to recognize Jubilee as a Parliamentary Party) is a personal decision, unconstitutional, with ill motives and intended to cause splitting up in the coalition,” the petition read in part.

“The Speaker acted contrary to the Constitution by declaring that Jubilee Party is a parliamentary party yet it is still part of the Petitioners coalition.”

Wetangula acknowledged Jubilee as a Parliamentary Party on October 25, simultaneously approving Chege’s removal as the Deputy Minority Whip of the National Assembly.

Back then, Speaker Wetangula determined that Jubilee had fulfilled the requirements to be recognized as a Parliamentary party.

The ex-Senator from Bungoma previously mentioned that during Chege’s replacement as Deputy Minority Whip by Embakasi West MP Mark Mwenje, she would take on the role of Whip within the party that was previously in power.

“From Deputy Minority Whip of some coalition to Chief Whip of the Jubilee Parliamentary Group. To God be the Glory,” Chege remarked following the leadership changes.
