People grieving at a funeral in Meru County became unruly and stormed two police stations in Igembe Central Sub County, releasing detainees and taking firearms before fleeing the scene.

As per information from an Occurrence Book (OB) report obtained by PoliticalPulseChat, around 500 mourners reportedly initially stormed the Antubeiga Police Post on Wednesday, December 6, at approximately 12:42 pm.

The team proceeded to forcibly enter the station’s armory container and absconded with two loaded firearms.

“They broke the armory metal box and stole from therein one AK47 rifle serial no. KP 5428814 loaded with 29 rounds of 7.62mm special. They also burnt the exhibit store,” read the OB report in part.

Law enforcement stated that a residence owned by a police officer was also set on fire during the operation.

There were no injuries resulting from the fire, but nothing could be rescued from the officer’s residence.

“At around 1630 hrs, they proceeded to Muringene Police Station and damaged a power garget backup, an HPV 20 HD monitor, a CPU, laser jet, and a Keyboard.”

“The prisoners held in cells were also forcefully rescued,” read the report in part.

The authorities recorded that the released individuals had been detained at the police stations on suspicion of engaging in different offenses such as theft and assault.

Immediately, a search for the suspects commenced while law enforcement focused on retrieving the loaded weapons.

Members of the local Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) were involved to assist in locating the suspects, but no arrests had been made at the time this article was published.

The motives for the raids on the two police stations had not been determined yet. Nonetheless, it was suggested that the individuals attending the burial, primarily young mourners, were there to pay their respects to their fellow member who was purportedly killed.

Nonetheless, the police did not release the details of the main suspect in the death of the 16-year-old boy.
