A 10-year-old Naivasha boy was hospitalised after circumcising himself

A hospitalized 10-year-old boy is in a serious yet stable condition after attempting self-circumcision in Naivasha.

In the unusual event at Ndabibi, a third-grade student utilized a kitchen knife to perform a ritual that resulted in significant bleeding before being saved and transported to the hospital.

The boy, while on vacation, chose to undergo circumcision, following the example of numerous other boys in the village situated 40 kilometers away from Naivasha town.

Lucy Wanja, the mother, became aware that something was wrong when she observed that the boy was staying in his bedroom and walking with signs of discomfort.

Upon closer inspection, she noticed his pants were drenched in blood and chose to investigate more, only to discover that he had performed a self-circumcision.

โ€œOne of the neighbors’ sons was circumcised a couple of weeks back and I never realized that my son was mature enough to know what was going on,โ€ she said on Wednesday.

As she sought assistance, the lone parent mentioned struggling to provide enough food for the rest of her family, emphasizing the necessity of specialized treatment for the child.

A few days following the circumcision of a young boy, he underwent nearly a week of torment inflicted by a gang of youths in Mai Mahiu before law enforcement rescued him.

Three individuals, among them the stepmother, have been apprehended by the authorities and are currently in police custody, awaiting formal charges of attempted murder to be brought against them in court.

Captain Kungโ€™u Muigai, from the Patron Kikuyu Council of Elders, urged the church to refrain from involvement in initiation ceremonies.

He expressed through the ‘Kiama Kia Maa’ that the church ought to focus on religious affairs, leaving cultural matters such as initiation to be overseen by community elders.

โ€œYou have never seen the elders baptizing someone as itโ€™s the responsibility of the church and circumcision of boys should be left to the elders,โ€ he said.

Muigai attributed the increase in bullying incidents involving recently baptized boys to the involvement of churches and inexperienced young individuals in the initiation procedure.

โ€œAs Kikuyu elders, we have circumcised over 10,000 boys in the last couple of weeks and counseled them on morals and the community’s cultural beliefs and practices,โ€ he said.
