UDA MPs Move to Impeach Murkomen Amidst Mau Mau Road Deadlock

A group of Members of Parliament representing Mt Kenya have issued a warning of potentially taking action to reprimand the Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary, Kipchumba Murkomen, due to the lack of progress in road projects within the area.

They specifically drew Murkomen’s focus to the Mau Mau road, which the Jubilee administration commenced building but had to halt because of insufficient funds.

“Murkomen should ensure the road is completed and we will not wait more than six months. If after six months contractors will not have returned on site, we will collect signatures to impeach you,” Kangema MP Peter Kihungi said.

On Sunday, Kihungi addressed the congregation at Ndueni Full Gospel Church in Kangema, accompanied by Juja MP George Koimburi, Kinyona MCA Liz Mbugua, and various other community leaders.

They urged the government to finish all road projects that have been halted in the area, in addition to the Mau Mau road, which connects multiple counties in the region.

They mentioned that the government has expended a substantial amount of funds on the road projects, and leaving them unfinished would result in squandering public resources.

The lawmakers stated that before the delay in the progress of the Mau Mau road, the Jubilee government had allocated Sh4.5 billion for its construction.

They additionally asserted that the funding designated for finishing the road within the previous supplementary budget was reduced to Sh175 million from its initial allocation of Sh280 million.

Mbugua mentioned that President William Ruto made assurances to finish the halted road projects in the area, yet the execution of this promise was significantly delayed.

She mentioned that local inhabitants are facing difficulties moving around various locations in the area due to continuous heavy rainfall, making the roads impossible to pass through.

“We have problems because those from one side of the area cannot access the other side. Even taking patients to hospital is a big problem now,” she said.

Koimburi asserted that the government is behaving as though the neglected Mau Mau road isn’t a significant project despite being among the promises they made to the people who voted for them.

“I want to tell the President, I want to tell the CS that Mau Mau issue is now a concern for our locals,” he said.

The purpose of constructing the 165-kilometer Mau Mau link road was to honor Mau Mau war veterans and facilitate access to the Aberdares forest ecosystem.

The road links Murangโ€™a, Kiambu, Nyeri, and Nyandarua counties.

The Kenya Roads Act 2007 grants the Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA) the responsibility for the creation, restoration, upkeep, and oversight of rural roads across the nation.

The responsibility also lies with the authority to ensure that the standard of road construction aligns with the guidelines set by the Minister of Roads and Transport.

However, Mau Mau Road-LOT 3 is within the jurisdiction of the Kenya National Highways Authority.
