Traffic Police Shoots at EACC Officers Deployed to Arrest Him on Highway

During an operation at a roadblock at the Karagita Junction in Naivasha, Nakuru County, on Thursday morning, an ethics and anti-corruption commission (EACC) detectives were confronted by a traffic police officer who discharged firearms.

In a statement to the media, Twalib Mbarak, the chief executive officer (CEO) of the EACC, revealed that anti-corruption investigators were carrying out an undercover operation to apprehend officers who had come to their attention for bribing motorists.

However, the traffic police officer opened fire on the detectives in an attempt to elude apprehension when the EACC sleuths arrived at the site and their intentions became apparent.

Mbarak noted that throughout the ordeal, none of his officers sustained injuries. Nevertheless, the traffic officer was able to evade capture.

As of the article’s publication, the officer’s location remained unknown, despite the collaborative efforts of EACC and the National Police Service (NPS) to locate him.

However, Mbarak disclosed that three additional police officers were apprehended and transported to the Nairobi headquarters of the EACC for further examination.

The three officers will be prosecuted in court once the investigations are concluded.

“This morning the EACC managed to have a raid where we arrested three traffic officers who were taking bribes along the road from motorists. One policeman managed to escape.

“He was armed and tried to fire at our officers. Fortunately, there were no injuries but he managed to escape,” the EACC boss stated.

EACC has proposed, in the wake of the incident, that all traffic officers stationed at roadblocks be unarmed unless essential.

“Our position as EACC, in coordination with the IG, is that traffic police officers should never be armed unless it is extremely necessary,” he stated.

Conversely, he expressed that comparable activities would persist, particularly in light of the approaching holiday season and the current state of the nation.

Mbarak emphasized that targeting areas of high corruption throughout the nation for raids in the coming weeks had already been determined by the anti-corruption agency.
