Missing Kenyan Among 4 Dead in Canada Mass Shooting Incident

On Sunday, November 26, 2023, a Kenyan student enrolled in the Biology program at the University of Manitoba was fatally shot inside a residence located on West Broadway in Canada.

Melelek Leseri Lesikel, age 29, was among the thirty-nine casualties in a mass shooting that occurred at 143 Langside; one additional victim was placed in critical condition.

The Winnipeg Police Department reports that the incident transpired at approximately 4:00 a.m. Five people were injured when the police raided the residential block in response to an emergency call and in an attempt to free the captives.

Three of the victims were rushed to the hospital, where one perished during treatment. Two of the victims were pronounced deceased at the scene.

An additional individual passed away on November 27, 2023, bringing the total number of fatalities to four. The progress of the victim, who was left in critical condition, is being monitored.

Lesikel, a Kenyan student, was reported absent for several months before his demise. Before his move out in 2017, his former roommate affirmed to Free Press Canada that it had been ten months since their last communication.

Pamela Obonde, president of the Kenya Association of Manitoba, verified that the deceased had a family in Kenya and a brother in the United States.

In contrast, Sam Aguko, the former president of the association. Stated that his last conversation with the mother of the deceased occurred approximately two years ago. During his tenure as the community leader.

โ€œTo be honest, I was surprised that he was in Winnipeg. All along, I thought he was back in Kenya and he was never coming back,โ€ Aguko opened up in an interview.

During a period in which Lesikel was missing, his mother requested Aguko’s assistance in locating him. The search party that recently reunited the mother and son was alarmed to discover that he had once more vanished.

โ€œWe tried our best to find him, but we never found him. Then his mom came to Winnipeg and he reappeared,โ€ he said. โ€œThey were able to connect and she went home with him back to Kenya.โ€

Free Press court investigations revealed that Leseri did not have any criminal records. Which would have warranted a search party visiting police stations in an attempt to locate him.ย

As of November 29, 2023, Winnipeg police had yet to apprehend any individuals suspected of involvement in the gunfire incident.
