Man Caught Stealing Shoes in Kahawa Wendani Jumps to Death From 4th Floor

A man jumped from the 4th floor of a residential apartment in Kahawa Wendani while attempting to escape with a pair of shoes he had allegedly stolen.

The incident is reported to have occurred around the Matopeni area in the morning hours of Saturday, November 25.

According to residents, the man broke his legs in the process. He also sustained injuries to the head.

This forced well-wishers who had thronged the scene to reach out to the local police to take him to the hospital.

Upon arrival, the officers and the wellwishers turned to a missionary group, the St. Franscisca Elizabethan Sisters, which offers ambulance services.

Man jumps from fourth flour after being caught stealing a pair of shoes in Kahwa Wendani on November 25, 2023.

The man was then rushed to the Kenyatta National Hospital owing to the severity of his injuries. However, he died while receiving treatment.

His body was moved to the morgue as efforts were launched to trace his family.

Meanwhile, a section of Kenyans have been sharing images of the incident online as they attempt to help in the process of identification.

“We tried our best with the help of Wendani police officers to help him get to hospital on time. We found an ID and we are sharing this to help his family find him,” Derrick Mbugua, who broke news of the incident wrote on Facebook.

Police are yet to state the incident.

The Kahawa Wendani incident is a testament to the recent surge of theft within Nairobi. According to the State of National Security report released earlier this month by President William Ruto, Nairobi and Kiambu recorded the highest crime rates.

Nairobi took the lead with 10,078 criminal cases recorded between September 1, 2022, to August 31, 2023. Kiambu County followed closely with 9,242 cases.

The report indicated that the largest number of suspected criminals arrested were between 30 and 40 years old.
