133 KCPE candidates awarded wrong marks in some subjects – Knec

The Kenya National Examination Council has acknowledged that 133 candidates were awarded the wrong marks in the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education exam.ย

Knec CEO David Njengere on Saturday said they have been receiving appeals from some affected schools on dissatisfaction with their results as received through the SMS code 40054.

Njengere said Knec also received queries from candidates with low marks in some of the subjects, mainly in English and Kiswahili.

“Knec has reviewed all the appeals and found that there were 133 candidates affected.”

Njengere assured that all the 133 cases have been addressed and results for the affected candidates updated appropriately.

Further, the Knec boss revealed that results for some candidates were misaligned and marks and grades in Kiswahili placed in the Kenyan Sign Language section.

He further said there were cases where grades in Science and Social Studies and Religious Education were truncated incorrectly and were missing the plus (+) and minus (-) signs as expected.

“The error affected only the SMS results due to configuration issues as the results in the KNEC portal are accurate,” Njengere said.

He said Knec notified the SMS service provider and the error in the text messages was resolved immediately.

Njengere advised that learners visit their schools to get their provisional results since some of those sent via SMS contain errors.

“Candidates have been advised to visit their schools and collect the official provisional results slips and raise any query for review of their results, if any, within the stipulated 30 days period,” Njengere said.

The Ministry of Education released the 2023 KCPE examination results for 1,406,557 on Wednesday, November 23.

The top candidate scored 428 marks.
