10 arrested in dramatic start of Maina Njenga case in Nakuru

On their way to the Nakuru Law Courts to attend the hearing of the case involving erstwhile Mungiki leader Maina Njenga, ten individuals were apprehended.

Four individuals who had utilized the postponement to obtain a cup of tea were subsequently excluded from court after being denied access to the compound.

Notwithstanding the court permitting the prosecution and defense to coordinate and grant access to specific individuals within the premises.

Protests against the high police presence at the Nakuru Law Courts prevented the case from commencing as planned.

Attorney Ndegwa Njiru opined that armed police officers’ decision to obstruct every road leading to the Nakuru Law Courts to deter citizens was improper.

He issued a dire threat that the defense would organize a demonstration in opposition to the court hearing if acquaintances and relatives of the twelve defendants were denied access.

He instructed Chief Magistrate Kipkurui Kibelion to convene the Nakuru County Police Commander and mandate the re-appointment of all supplementary officers stationed in the vicinity of the Nakuru Law Courts.

“Even lawyers are not being allowed in court before showing identity cards to prove that they are members of the Law Society of Kenya,” he said.

The defense’s petitions were rejected by prosecutor Wycliffe Omwenga, who stated that the court’s capacity to accommodate the friends and relatives was limited.

He asserted that a witness passed out on Monday as a result of courtroom congestion.

Magistrate Kibelion observed that although the court was unable to facilitate all individuals, the matter could be deliberated upon by the prosecution and the defense regarding admission.

Njenga and the co-accused are accused, among other offenses, of belonging to an unlawful sect, attending an unlawful gathering, being in unlawful possession of firearms and marijuana, and recruiting individuals into an unlawful organization.

The alleged commission of the offenses occurred in the Githioro area of Wanyororo, Bahati Sub-County, from May 11 to May 12.
