At this time, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula desires that electorates from their member countries vote to form the East African Legislators Assembly (EALA).

Wetangula, speaking on Friday, November 17, at the Speakers Bureau Conference in Juba, advocated for an acceleration of the EALA election process.

Presently, EALA Members of Parliament are chosen by the Parliaments of the East African Community member states after party nominations.

“In the spirit of enhanced integration of the East African Community, we need to consider, positively, a change in the mode of election of EALA legislators,” said Wetang’ula.

Involving electors in the election of EALA MPs, according to the Speaker, will contribute to a greater comprehension of the regional bloc and the functions of its representatives.

“This suffrage election will enable candidates for the EALA seats to vigorously traverse the region as they campaign, enabling local people to understand the roles of the Regional Assembly and the importance of the EAC integration,” added Speaker Wetang’ula.

Moreover, he advocated for the East Africa Community (EAC) Speakers’ meeting to be unified.

The purpose of the establishment of the EAC Speakers’ Bureau in 2008 was to facilitate a functional working relationship among the Speakers of the five partner states. South Sudan, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, and Tanzania.

The primary objective behind the establishment of the Bureau was to bolster the influence of the National Legislatures on the EAC integration agenda.

At this time, nine Kenyans have been elected to the 5th assembly of the EALA for the period 2022 to 2027.

Prominent individuals among them are Winnie Odinga, the daughter of Raila Odinga, and Kennedy Kalonzo Musyoka, the son of Kalonzo Musyoka.

Hassan Omar, a former senator from Mombasa, Kanini Kega, an entrepreneur, David Ole Sankok, and Falhada Iman Dekow are some others.
