Former Kisii Governor James Ongwae Appointed To State Job

ICT Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo has appointed James Ongwae, the former governor of Kisii, to preside over the Universal Service Advisory Council.

As per a Gazette Notice that was released on Wednesday, Ongwae has been designated as the committee’s leader of eight members.

“In exercise of the powers conferred by Section 102K of the Kenya Information and Communications Act, 1998, the Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communication, and the Digital Economy appoints James Ongwae as chairperson of the Universal Service Advisory Council for three years,” read part of the notice.

As per the Public Service Commission (PSC), the Council is entrusted with the responsibility of offering strategic policy guidance and advice to the Communications Authority of Kenya regarding the management and execution of the Universal Service Fund.

Additionally, the council shall execute any additional duties that may be delegated by the Board of Directors at any given moment.

Patrick Muriithi, Amos Omolo, Lily Cherono, Francis Gitau, Joy Frida Mutuma, and Ferdinand Nyongesa are the group’s members.

Elizabeth Limagur and Benjamin Kiptanui are two others. The members shall be appointed for a three-year term, commencing on November 15, 2023, per the order.

Having completed two terms as the governor of Kisii, Ongwae was an ardent Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) supporter before renouncing his allegiance to the Kenya Kwanza regime.

He accompanied a group of Gusii leaders to the official residence of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua in Karen in September 2022, to facilitate their integration into the Kenya Kwanza government.

The former governor formally resigned from the ODM party one month later, citing the welfare of the Kisii community as the reason for his departure.

Moreover, he asserted that the ODM party had prioritized the distribution of positions according to political patronage rather than his own interests.

At the beginning of this year, Ongwae was selected as one of eight candidates for the Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC) shortlist. Nevertheless, he was unable to attain the aforementioned position.
