Senate Housing Committee Summons Nairobi Governor Sakaja

The Senate Housing Committee on Tuesday summoned Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja to address concerns raised by residents of the city.

This occurred after the Governor’s consistent disregard for summonses issued by the parliamentary committee.

Documents cited by Senator Edwin Sifuna of Nairobi indicate that the Governor will be obligated to provide further clarification regarding the urban renewal strategy for the Eastlands region.

On June 16, the Senate made a formal request to Sakaja for the information; however, it was not provided at that moment, thus justifying the summons.

Concerning the Eastlands case, the Committee required clarification regarding County Government officials’ alleged intimidation and threats against leaders of residents’ associations who opposed redevelopment plans for the estates.

โ€œSubmit a copy of the agreement between the Israeli Government and the government of Kenya for the construction of the Estates through a tenant purchase scheme,โ€ the notice read in part.

Ofafa Jericho, Jericho Lumumba, New Pumwani/California, and Ofafa Maringo were among the estates that were impacted.

Additionally, the Governor was urged to provide a statement detailing the rent that the County Government of Nairobi has collected for Ofafa Jericho Estate since 1985, Jericho Lumumba Estate since 1988, and Maringo Estate since 1990.

โ€œExplain the circumstances under which the contractor was approved for the redevelopment of New Pumwani/California Estate and then demolished Flat C- on May 27, 2023, at 2.00 a.m.,โ€ the Committee advised.

On October 4, earlier in the year, Parliament called Sakaja to provide additional information regarding the operational status of the Green Park Terminus.

In addition, the legislators requested that the governor elaborate on the improvements being made to Uhuru Park and Central Park.

An investigation into the case was resumed on October 16. Subsequently, legislators requested Sakaja to provide them with the necessary information.

Furthermore, Sakaja was obligated to furnish sufficient details regarding the urban renewal strategy of the Eastlands region.
