Golf Ball Removal from 14-Year-Old Boy’s Colon Proves Challenging for Doctors
After a frantic procedure, doctors in Australia successfully removed a golf ball that had become lodged in a 14-year-old boy’s intestine.
According to a Case Reports in Surgery medical journal report, the boy put the ball in his anus and notified his mother when he realized he couldn’t retrieve or pass it. They went to the Royal Adelaide Hospital’s emergency room.

“He was not in any pain and could pass flatus. “The patient had attempted to defecate to expel the golf ball without success,” doctors wrote in a January 6 report.
During the examination, medics discovered no evidence of bowel obstruction or perineal trauma.
“The patient was examined under general anesthesia, and on rigid sigmoidoscopy, the golf ball was seen located within the sigmoid colon, beyond the reach of straight surgical instruments,” according to the report.
Golf Ball Removal from 14-Year-Old Boy’s Colon Proves Challenging for Doctors. During the two-hour procedure, doctors tried unsuccessfully to remove the golf ball with a suction cup, medical net, looped snare, quad-prong grasper, retrieval pouch, and balloon catheter.
“Given the family’s reluctance to undergo more aggressive intervention (e.g., laparotomy) and the absence of colonic obstruction, we decided to trial volume laxatives to facilitate golf ball passage,” doctors explained.

“In total, 1 L of glycogen (Fresenius Kabi, Bad Homburg, Germany) was administered orally, resulting in 3 hours of successful golf ball evacuation.”
They noted that the patient “remained clinically well” after the golf ball passed through and was discharged the same day.
“There was no sign of bowel injury. He was advised not to insert any more objects into his rectum in the future,” according to the report.
