Raila Mocks Ruto: ‘State of the Nation Address Sounded Like a Message to Moon Dwellers!’

Opposition leader Raila Odinga has criticized President William Rutoโ€™s State of the Nation speech saying it did not address the plight of the common mwananchi.

According to Mr. Odinga, the speech delivered by President Ruto at Parliament buildings on Thursday was not realistic and did not align with the general feeling of the populace towards the government at present.

The Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition party leader, speaking at the โ€˜Transforming a Nationโ€™ conference by the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung Foundation on Friday, urged the Head of State to stop living in delusions of grandeur and wake up to reality.

โ€œThe government today is living in denial. If you listened to the State of the Nation address yesterday, itโ€™s as if you (President Ruto) were talking to some people who were living on planet Moon; youโ€™re not being realistic to problems confronting this country,” said Mr. Odinga.

“And these problems must be confronted frontally, not by diversions here and there. The cost of living is real and itโ€™s killing the people; it has to be addressed if youโ€™re going to relieve the plight of the people.โ€

The former premier went ahead to opine that the countryโ€™s economy is in a worse state than it was over a year ago before the election due to policy mishaps implemented by the ruling government.

โ€œThereโ€™s a devastating loss of trust and confidence in our economy, our financial markets, and our government. Weโ€™re caught in a cycle where reduced spending power leads to loss of jobs which leads to even less spending, where the people canโ€™t borrow because rates charged are too high, yet lack of borrowing slows growth and leads to even less credit,โ€ he said.
