Kelly’s sexual abuse charges will be dropped by a Chicago prosecutor.

A prosecutor in Chicago has dropped sexual abuse and assault charges against R Kelly, who faces decades in prison after being convicted of federal charges.

Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx has stated that her office “will no longer be pursuing these indictments” and will request that the charges be dismissed.

“Sometimes justice is served even when no one is convicted,” she explained.

Kelly, 56, was found guilty of racketeering and sex trafficking in 2021 and sentenced to 30 years in prison.

He was also convicted of sex crimes last year, for which he is scheduled to be sentenced next month and is unlikely to be released until he is 80.

In 2019, Cook County State’s Attorney Foxx announced the state’s case, stating that the incidents occurred between May 1998 and January 2010. There is no statute of limitations in Illinois for child sex abuse charges.

However, federal prosecutors in Chicago and New York moved more quickly to file indictments, and the Cook County courts were slowed as a result of the Covid-19 delays.

“Because of the lengthy sentences associated with these convictions, our office has decided not to expend our limited resources and court time on the indictments that we previously charged Mr. Kelly,” Ms. Foxx said.

She stated that resources would be better used to prosecute other sexual offenders.

Ms. Foxx had urged victims to come forward to press charges against Kelly in 2019.

Lanita Carter, who came forward in 2019, expressed her displeasure with the decision to drop charges.

“I have spent nearly two decades hoping that my abuser would be brought to justice for what he did to me,” she said, adding, “With today’s announcement, all hope of justice for my case has vanished.”

Kelly is also facing a sexual misconduct case in Hennepin County, Minnesota, but that case has been halted as well due to the ongoing federal cases.
