Several judicial officers fared exceptionally well in the most recent evaluation conducted by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC).

As per the document obtained by Kenyans.co.ke, judicial officers are slated to receive a stipend that will be allocated exclusively to personnel carrying out specialized duties.

“Consequently, in the exercise of 2010 as provided under Article 230(4)(a) of the Constitution of Kenya, SRC has reviewed and set herein the remuneration and benefits for the Judiciary under the Third Remuneration and Benefits Review Cycle that covers Financial Years (FY) 2021/2022-2024/2025,” the review reads.

Chief Justice Martha Koome, Deputy Chief Justice Philomena Mwilu, and Deputy Principal Judges are all scheduled to receive Ksh150,000 as a special allowance as a result of the most recent review.

A sum of Ksh130,000 will be allocated to resident justices, whereas the Head of Station will receive 30% of the monthly pensionable emoluments.

Judges and magistrates whose responsibilities extend beyond those specified in their terms of service and for which they receive a regular salary shall be granted the allowance.

Judicial officers will be granted a maximum of Ksh25,000 in airtime per month.

Regarding the daily sustenance allowance for domestic and international travel, the review stipulated that officers shall receive compensation by periodic guidelines established by SRC.

Similarly, the annual leave allowance for the CJ, DCJ, Judges of the Supreme Court, Judges of the Court of Appeal, and Judges of the High Court shall be Ksh50,000 per month.

An annual leave allowance of Ksh30,000 will be granted to Chief Magistrates, Senior Principal Magistrates, Principal Magistrates, Senior Resident Magistrates, and Resident Magistrates.

The eligibility criteria for the Chief Justice and his Deputy include a mortgage of Ksh 40 million and an auto loan of Ksh 10 million.

The maximum auto loans available to judges and magistrates are Ksh8 million and Ksh4 million, respectively.

Additionally, they will each qualify for a mortgage of a maximum of Ksh35 million and Ksh20 million.

3% annual interest shall be charged on any balance that remains unpaid throughout the term of the loan. Twenty years is the term of the mortgage, while five years is the term of the auto loan.

High Court, Supreme Court, and Court of Appeal judges will be provided with an official vehicle equipped with a maximum displacement of 3000cc for transportation purposes.

Chief magistrates and Chief Kadhis shall be granted an official vehicle with a maximum displacement of 2000cc, in addition to a monthly commuter allowance of Ksh24,000.

Other magistrates and Kadhis will receive a commuter allowance as periodically determined by the SRC.

“An annual medical cover shall be provided to the State officers, one spouse, and up to four children below the age of 25 years fully dependent on the State officers as outlined by SRC,” read part of the report.

Magistrates pose in front of the Supreme court Judges on December 7, 2022.
