Saturday, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) reported the successful recovery of 417 mobile phones that had been seized in Nyeri County.

The agency additionally disclosed in a statement the apprehension of a 32-year-old male suspect in connection with the mobile phone thefts.

The agency’s statement indicates that detectives conducted an unannounced search of the middle-aged man’s electronics store, where several items had been concealed, and subsequently arrested him.

Additionally, the agency reported that the apprehension and recovery of the suspects followed closely after the interrogation of two men who had been apprehended by Nyeri-based detectives for stealing mobile phones from Gatitu, Nyeri, consumers.

“The Nyeri security command has warned against a surge in pick pocketers who are mostly interested in smartphones, but assures the public that whatever cartels are involved are on police radar and will soon face the full force of the law,” DCI noted in a statement.

The three will spend the weekend in police custody and will be charged at their arraignment in court on Monday, per DCI.

The occurrence occurred within a week of the raids conducted by detectives on October 24th at several stores in Eldoret, which resulted in the retrieval of various electronic devices.

Eldoret Township’s Petresha Building was the location of an electronics store where the items were recovered; there, 56 mobile phones, 45 televisions, and 41 laptops were recovered.

A raid on multiple electronic repair businesses that were suspected of carrying stolen goods resulted in the successful recovery of the items.

“Electronic repair shops believed to be confiscating stolen items were searched and assorted electronics without prerequisite ownership receipts recovered,” the DCI said in a statement at the time.
