Kenya Railways Increases Fares for All Train Services

Kenya Railways has increased fares for all train services as a result of the recent rise in petroleum prices, which has affected operating expenses.

Kenya Railways announced a fare increase for five services, including the Madaraka Express Passenger Service, the Madaraka Express Commuter Service, the Nairobi Commuter Rail Service, the Kisumu Safari Train, and the Nanyuki Safari Train, in a statement.

First-class passengers traveling from Nairobi to Mombasa will now pay Ksh4,500, an increase from the previous average of Ksh3,000.

Economy class passengers traveling from Nairobi to Mombasa will now pay an additional Ksh500, up from Ksh1,000.

The fare from Nairobi to Suswa will increase from Ksh200 to Ksh250.

“This increase is informed by changes in the energy and petroleum sector where fuel prices have significantly increased thus affecting the cost of our operations,” read part of the statement.

The revised fares will go into effect on January 1, 2024, according to Kenya Railways.

The company informed customers making advance purchases for the Madaraka Express Passenger Service that their pricing would be adjusted to account for the 60-day window for purchasing tickets.

According to Kenya Railways, parents will pay half fare for minors between 3 to 11 years old. Children over 11 years old will pay the full fare while those aged 3 years and below will not incur any fare charges.

The increased fees are a result of the difficult economic situation in the country, which has been exacerbated by the high cost of petroleum and the rising cost of essential goods that are out of reach for many Kenyans.
