Mosque Attack in Pakistan Kills 30, Injures 125

According to authorities, a deadly blast inside a mosque in Pakistan’s northwestern city of Peshawar on Monday was most likely a suicide attack.

According to Peshawar deputy commissioner Shafiullah Khan, the powerful explosion killed at least 31 people and injured 125 others.

Rescue efforts are currently underway inside the mosque, which is located within a police compound in the city and is mostly attended by law enforcement officials.

So far, no one has claimed responsibility for the attack, which occurred in the middle of afternoon prayers.

Peshawar Police Chief Mohammad Aijaz Khan told CNN that the blast inside the Police Lines Mosque was “likely a suicide attack,” echoing Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

“The brutal killing of Muslims prostrating before Allah is against Quranic teachings,” Sharif said in a statement, adding that “targeting the House of Allah proves that the attackers have nothing to do with Islam.”

“Terrorists want to instill fear by targeting those who defend Pakistan,” the prime minister continued.

“Those who fight against Pakistan will be blacked out.”

Sharif went on to say that “the entire nation and institutions are united to end terrorism” and that a “comprehensive strategy” is being developed to restore law and order in Peshawar, which is located in the northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, whose Pakistan Tehreek e Insaaf party controls the provincial government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, also condemned the blast, saying in a tweet, “it is imperative we improve our intelligence gathering & properly equip our police forces to combat the growing threat of terrorism.”
