MPs Sabina Chege, and Kanini Kega to lose seats soon – Murathe

Jubilee vice chairman David Murathe has said that nominated MP Sabina Chege and his EALA counterpart Kanini Kega risk losing their positions for supporting Kenya Kwanza.

Speaking on Thursday, Murathe said they will make the changes once they assume office officially.

This follows the move by the Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetang’ula to approve the removal of Nominated MP Sabina Chege as Deputy Minority Whip.

“Once we are properly in office by the court, the first agenda business will be to denominate Sabina Chege and Kanini Kega. Kega’s position at EALA was from Jubilee,” he said.

Murathe added that all people who have declared their support for President William Ruto should be dewhipped.

Chege was replaced by Embakasi West MP Mark Mwenje who had been nominated by Jubille as her replacement.

“In this regard, Mark Mwenje replaces nominated MP Sabina Chege as the Deputy Minority Whip,” Wetang’ula announced.

“To give effect the provisions of article 36 of the Constitution on freedom of association and article 38 of the Constitution on the political right which confer upon each member of the House the right to determine which entity they wish to be associated with.”

The leadership change comes after months of push and pull between the opposition, Speaker Wetang’ula, and the Jubilee Party faction allied with President William Ruto.

The minority side had settled on Embakasi Mwenje to replace Sabina.

Wetang’ula further declared Jubilee a parliamentary party and handed nominated Chege the powerful Whip position for the new entity.

Initially, Parliament only recognized Kenya Kwanza and Azimio la Umoja as the Majority and Minority in the 13th Parliament.

“Jubilee is hereby recognized as a parliamentary party with the meaning of Standing Order 20A, this recognition does not in any way elevate it to or affects the status given to the majority and minority party by the Standing Orders and the Constitution.”

“Consequently, Sabina Chege by the written support of 21 out of 28 members of Jubilee members and on account of having been the last officially recognized member of the Jubilee party forming part of the leadership is allowed to perform in the interim the role of the Whip of that party in the House.”
