Junior Police Officer Finds Boss At Home Dead

On Tuesday, a police officer assigned to the Kinoo Police Station in Kiambu County was discovered deceased in her home by a colleague who had requested to be relieved of duty.

According to police report number 3/15/10/2023, the incident began when Police Constable Leah Wangui, her neighbor, asked Corporal Paul Cheboi to prepare porridge and melons, which they both consumed.

At the time, constable Wangui informed Cheboi that she wasn’t feeling well, but she thanked him for providing brunch. Wangui, who appeared intoxicated, returned to bed to rest.

Later in the evening, Corporal Cheboi went to check on Wangui and asked her to absolve him of his responsibilities for the day.

However, he discovered her on the ground, holding a banana and half an orange in her right hand.

Sub-County Police Commander and Officer Commanding Station (OCS) Kinoo Geoffrey Gituba visited the scene after being alerted by the subordinate officer.

Since May, when she was discharged from the Chiromo rehabilitation center, preliminary investigations revealed that Officer Wangui was still recuperating from alcoholism.

At her residence, the detectives recovered various bottles of 750 ml spirit and one bottle of 750 ml spirit that had been stolen in half, which were taken as evidence.

The uninjured corpse of Wangui was transported to the Kenyatta University mortuary for an autopsy.

As homicides and suicides increase, experts have warned of a mental health crisis within the police force.

According to the most recent statistics from the National Police Service (NPS), one in ten police officers in the country suffers from mental health conditions.

To address the issue, the Service has established channels for officers to communicate with their supervisors or coworkers about any work-related difficulties.

Counselors, physicians, and psychologists all recommend seeking assistance whenever experiencing a mental health issue. Dial the Kenya Red Cross’s toll-free number, 1199, for assistance.
