The French government has committed Ksh222 million (โ‚ฌ1.4 million) to support the school nutrition program of the governor of Nairobi, Johnson Sakaja.

Sakaja, who is presently on an official visit to France, disclosed that the funds will be used to expand the program.

Sakaja and Chrysoula Zacharopoulou, French Minister of State for Development and International Partnerships, met over dinner on Tuesday in Paris.

โ€œOur delegation received the high honor of being hosted by my friend and great friend of Kenya Chrisolou Zacharopoulou, the Minister of State for Development, to a special dinner reception last evening in Paris,โ€ Sakaja said in his statement.

Sakaja is representing President William Ruto abroad for the duration of the first global school feeding program, which is anticipated to last two days.

The summit convenes various heads of state and ministers to discuss how to invest in sustainable food systems and Climate Change action via school meals.

During the summit, Sakaja is expected to appraise delegates on the โ€œDishi na Countyโ€ program which he launched in August 2023.

Initially, President William Ruto was anticipated to attend the summit, as Emmanuel Macron had extended an invitation. He communicated, however, that he would be unable to attend the summit due to official obligations.

“Due to prior official commitments, His Excellency the President will be unable to attend this meeting. In this regard, the President has requested that you represent him at this meeting given that you have been invited as well,” the President said in a statement.

Dishi na County is a program introduced by Governor Sakaja to provide more than 250,000 children in Nairobi’s public primary schools with regular, subsidized school meals.

The program is the first urban initiative in Kenya.

Phase One of Dishi na County’s school construction initiative targets 42 schools.

Sakaja allocated Ksh1.2 billion to the nutrition program in his first budget. A further Ksh500 million was allocated for the construction of seven additional kitchens and the subsidization of the cost of a child’s meal.
