Ruto-Raila team seeks further 30-day extension for talks

The Majority Leader of the National Assembly, Kimani Ichung’wah, has proposed a 30-day mandate extension for the National Dialogue Committee.

On Tuesday, while introducing the motion in the House, the Kikuyu lawmaker proposed extending the Committee’s mandate until November 28.

On October 28, the tenure committee commanded by Ichung’wah and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka will expire.

He explained that the extension would allow the team of ten to complete its deliberations on the Kenyan proposals presented during the hearings.

In the revised proposals, the team is tasked with communicating its recommendations to President William Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga by November 26.

“Recognising the need for the committee to conclude the consideration of the issue for negotiations, the process for making appropriate policy and legal reforms of the issues, the houses resolve to extend the mandate of the committee by another 30 days,” the MP proposed.

The committee is expected to implement policy and legal reforms regarding electoral justice, pending constitutional issues, political party loyalty, and the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF).

Other proposals will address the Senate Oversight Fund and the creation of state offices, including the opposition leader’s office.

Both chambers will evaluate the extension proposals and decide between them.

Early this month, the NDC concluded its public hearings and commenced deliberations on several issues raised by Kenyans.

The team has reached an agreement regarding the two-thirds gender norm and political party loyalty.

In addition, the committee agreed to solidify the positions of Prime Cabinet Secretary and Leader of the Opposition.

Team members have yet to elaborate on the proposed office layout.
