CS Kuria to Introduce Service Fees at All Huduma Centres

Monday, Public Service Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria announced a proposal to implement fees for all services provided by Huduma Centres nationwide.

Kuria explained during the takeover of the State Department of Public Service that the levy would be used to operate the centers and reduce the Treasury’s financial burden.

“You have been enjoying these services without paying, there is no more free lunch. You have to pay for it, we will introduce a fee for service for government service and private service to support our e-commerce because Huduma Centre will be the backbone for e-commerce,” he stated.

Josiah Murigu, the communication officer for Kuria, explained that the proposal was still in its infancy.

Before it is implemented, he continued, it will undergo public participation and be presented to the legislature.

“We have not settled on the amount yet, this is one of the many changes we want to introduce as a way of improving this ministry,” he told PoliticalPulseChat.

Kuria also explained that he will collaborate with the government to increase the number of services available to Kenyans through private-sector partnerships.

He added that President William Ruto had tasked his cabinet with achieving sustainability and reducing reliance on the national treasury.

“This is one of the areas (Huduma Centres) that the public sector has outshined the private sector,” he remarked.

Huduma Centres provide, among other services, National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) registration, national ID application, student loan application (HELB), driver’s license and renewal, and single business permit.

The government intends to increase the number of institutions, which currently number at least 52.

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta introduced Huduma Centres as part of Vision 2030.
