Southern Bypass Road Accident Claims Lives

Saturday morning, along the Southern bypass in Nairobi County, a gruesome accident reportedly claimed the lives of three individuals.

The accident at the Karen exit near Ngong Forest was caused by a lorry that lost control and collided with a private vehicle.

In widely disseminated photographs, the personal vehicle was twisted and deformed, with its windows pulverized along the highway.

It was also pushed off the bypass and into a nearby drainage ditch, with witnesses alleging that it flipped multiple times.

Emergency personnel raced to the scene to treat the deceased, whose bodies were transported to a nearby morgue. It was unclear whether any survivors had emerged from the devastation.

The police had not yet arrived at the accident scene at the time this article was published.ย

The tragedy occurred less than a week after Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen made an impromptu assessment visit to the highway.ย

Since Kenya National Highways Authority engineers erected new obstacles on the bypass, motorists and other road users have complained of an increase in road accidents.

They lamented that some obstacles were raised too high, making it difficult for drivers to maintain vehicle control. The drivers also complained about the absence of appropriate road signs and indicators along the congested highway.

“If you intend to use the Southern Bypass, exercise caution observing low speed because huge bumps were raised overnight sending some vehicles off the road and hitting into each other. Accidents have occurred unfortunately some fatal,” lamented a motorist.

As a result, Kipchumba Murkomen ordered the deployment of police officers to patrol the road and prevent vehicular deaths.

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KENHA) also urged motorists to use the Southern Bypass in Nairobi with caution after a succession of fatal accidents.

According to NTSA data, at least 21,760 people were engaged in road accidents in 2018, an increase of 1,135 from 2021, when 20,625 people were involved in road accidents.
