‘If We Can’t Fix Sondu Then Haiti Will Be A Hellhole,’ Siaya Governor James Orengo Says
Governor of Siaya, James Orengo, has stated that if Kenya is unable to address the escalating conflict in Sondu town, it will have no chance of liberating gang-controlled Haiti.
In the last 48 hours, tensions have risen in the border town of Kericho-Kisumu, where at least seven people have been slain and many more injured.
Due to the town’s navigable terrain and established logistical and digital infrastructure, Orengo believes that security personnel will be able to effectively monitor the area and respond to security incidents.
“The terrain in the Sondu area is not demanding. Since ‘we’re digital,’ we can’t be outsmarted, and our infrastructure is adequate. Orengo stated in a statement on X, formerly Twitter, that aerial surveillance can readily pinpoint the location of raider mobilization and their movement.
The administrator of Siaya County added that if Kenya cannot address security threats in its territory, it will utterly fail to lead the UN Security Council-backed security mission in Haiti.
“If we can’t fix this, Haiti will become a security hellhole,” he added.

Earlier on Thursday, Azimio la Umoja opposition leader Raila Odinga pushed for Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki to be summoned to Parliament to answer for the fatal Sondu clashes and the planned deployment of Kenyan security forces to Haiti.
Raila questioned to the media why the Interior CS had not yet commented on the Sondu clashes.
“Why is the minister of the interior mute on this issue? He has not been to the location… This means that there is something the Government knows about the Sondu insecurity that Kenyans do not know,” said Raila.
The Azimio coalition also claimed that prominent figures, such as leaders and legislators from Kericho and the national government, are responsible for the violence and anarchy in Sondu.
Kindiki announced that the government has dispatched a multi-agency security team to Sondu to restore normalcy to the area following Raila’s statement.
In addition, he stated that all other security personnel discovered to be complicit in the clashes will be transferred, and the criminals will be apprehended.
