UDA Senator Clarifies 106M Payout to Ruto-Raila Talk Team

Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot has refuted allegations that the bipartisan talks team will receive Ksh106 million in allowances.

In a statement, Cheruiyot denied claims that taxpayer funds were used to fund the negotiations.

โ€œPlease establish the facts of any matter before running a campaign on it. We have never been paid any allowance. There has never been a charge to taxpayers on behalf of NADCO,โ€ the Senator stated in response to an article published by a local publication.

According to the article, the majority of the Ksh106 million would be allocated to the allowances of the ten-member team, with the remainder going to the allowances of the technical team and other expenses such as venue, security, and sustenance.

Co-chairs of the talks, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wa would receive Ksh50,000 per session for the 20 sessions they will preside over. This totals two million Kenyan Shillings.

The remaining eight members of the dialogue committee would receive Ksh40,000 per meeting, totaling Ksh6.4 million for the twenty meetings.

In addition, the technical crew for the bipartisan talks was projected to earn Ksh25,000 per session.

This figure translates to Ksh4 million for the 60-day period, given that this team has eight members.

The article also mentions the payment of Ksh4.6 million to Bomas of Kenya as the host and Ksh8 million for a retreat in Naivasha.

Also included were Ksh1.2 million for air tickets, Ksh2.4 million for advertising, and Ksh10 million for disseminating the final document.

โ€œThe fact that Parliament has seconded members of its secretariat to the talks team means taxpayersโ€™ money is involved in the Bomas talks. Both the National Assembly and the Senate approved a motion legally establishing the ongoing talks,โ€ wrote Nation.

The astounding number has prompted outrage among Kenyans, who deem it a waste of resources.

Kenyans are left with more questions than answers as a result of Cheruiyot’s statement, which punctures the narrative.
