Govt Defends Ruto Amid Questions on Geopolitical Stand

Since assuming office in 2022, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has defended President William Ruto’s foreign policy decisions amid scrutiny over his stance on geopolitical issues, particularly in the African context.

In a statement released on Friday, CS Alfred Mutua outlined the steps taken by President Ruto in his new capacity as a continental leader to bring peace to Africa.

The Ministry’s action to defend the Head of State came one day after President Ruto’s sincerity in claiming to be a Pan-Africanist came under intense scrutiny after a media outlet published a scathing article that scrutinized his stance on continental and global political affairs.

Mutua disclosed in the statement that Ruto had immersed himself in peace efforts after realizing that substantive regional and continental integration is impossible without peace.

The CS stated that Kenya has become a regional peace and security guarantor in Africa.

Mutua reaffirmed that Kenya does not interfere with or undermine the sovereignty of other nations. The CS particularly reiterated that Kenya’s interest in Sudan is to see the country return to normalcy.

“We have also used vital forums to highlight and spotlight our regionโ€™s peace and security architecture to ensure that the global community remains responsive to our unique circumstances,” the CS said.

Mutua argued that the consequences of Ruto’s peace efforts are readily apparent. The secretary of state cited the Juba Peace Agreement, ratified on December 5, 2022, as an example of a document that has brought peace to Sudan.

A day later, the third session of the EAC-led Inter-Congolese Dialogue concluded in Nairobi, according to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“The following day, the governments of Somalia and Somaliland agreed to resume reconciliation,” Mutua explained.

Mutua concluded by noting that the administration of President William Ruto is pleased with the progress made in stabilizing the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

This, according to the Ministry, was accomplished through the East African Community Regional Force, through which Kenya deployed peacekeepers to the troubled DRC.
