Martha Karua’s Stand on Kioni’s Role in Bipartisan Talks

Sunday, the leader of the Azimio Coalition, Martha Karua, distanced the coalition from attorney Makau Mutua’s appeal for the resignation of Jubilee Party Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni from the National Dialogue Committee (NADOC).

Karua stated in a statement that Mutua’s comments were his own and did not represent Azimio’s official stance on the matter.

Makau is a close ally of Azimio leader Raila Odinga and served as the campaign spokesperson for Odinga’s 2022 presidential campaign.

Karua reiterated in her statement that neither Kioni nor any other Azimio leader could be muzzled.

She implied that Kioni had every right to query the outcome of the negotiations.

“Results are the best evidence that negotiations will bear fruit,” Karue explained.

“Within sixty days, the cost of living will have skyrocketed,” time will tell.

Makau demanded Kioni’s resignation as chief of the Azimio technical team in a statement released on Saturday, after the embattled Secretary-General stated that the talks are a waste of time.

Unless he is a hypocrite, he must resign. How can one lead a team in negotiations he does not believe in?

Kioni had not responded to Makau’s remarks at the time this article was published.

This occurred even though, on Friday, Kioni dispelled rumors that Mt. Kenya’s leaders were planning to secede from the Azimio Coalition.

The former member of parliament for Ndaragwa was responding to a query about whether Kamwene, a new political organization comprised of politicians from the Mt Kenya region, was considering charting its own independent political course.

He assured Kenyans, “Kamwene Leadership is a part of Azimio, and we are more intact than others would like to believe.”

Kioni is in charge of the Azimio technical staff, while Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka and National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichungw’ah co-chair the NADOC.
