President Ruto Discusses Multinational Security Support Mission in Haiti with UN Secretary-General
On Thursday, President William Ruto held a telephone conversation with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to discuss the ongoing Kenyan-led Multinational Security Support Mission in Haiti. This mission, aimed at bringing peace to the conflict-ridden nation, has been a significant step in addressing the violence and instability affecting Haiti.
Kenyaโs Leadership in Haiti Peacekeeping Efforts
During the call, Guterres commended Kenya for its leadership role in the mission, acknowledging the countryโs commitment to restoring peace in Haiti. The United Nations has expressed its continued support for the mission, despite concerns about the lack of adequate funding.
Currently, the mission is being supported by voluntary contributions, but President Ruto has been advocating for the mission to be converted into a UN peacekeeping operation. This would allow funding from all 193 member states of the United Nations, ensuring the mission’s long-term sustainability.
“I held a telephone conversation with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, during which we discussed the UNโs continued support for the Multinational Security Support Mission in Haiti,” President Ruto stated. “He acknowledged Kenyaโs leadership role and commended our steadfast commitment to our shared goal of restoring stability in Haiti.”
Focus on Peace in Eastern DRC
The two leaders also discussed ongoing peace efforts in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where Ruto provided an update on the situation. He briefed Guterres on the outcome of a recent summit held between the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC), which proposed a roadmap for sustainable peace in the region.
“I called on the UN to support the joint EAC-SADC regional efforts in implementing the roadmap for peace in eastern DRC,” Ruto added. “Additionally, we reaffirmed our shared commitment to regional peace, security, and sustainable conflict resolution, emphasizing the importance of continued collaboration between the United Nations and regional initiatives.”
Ongoing Support for Regional Peace Initiatives
Both leaders emphasized the importance of collaboration between the United Nations and regional efforts to maintain peace and stability. With the ongoing peace missions in Haiti and the DRC, the UN continues to play a vital role in supporting conflict resolution and peacebuilding efforts in Africa.
President Rutoโs efforts to lead peace initiatives highlight Kenyaโs growing influence in regional and global peace efforts. As the situation in Haiti and eastern DRC evolves, the support from the United Nations and other international partners will be key to ensuring lasting peace and stability in these regions.
