The Kenyan government has rescued the national Judo team, which was stranded in Morocco after a recent earthquake struck the North African nation.

The Ministry of Sports issued a statement confirming the team’s safe return to Kenya, which was made possible by government interventions.

Additionally, the Ministry extended its condolences to the Moroccan citizens afflicted by the earthquake, which has already claimed over 2,000 lives.

Yesterday, Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba disclosed that eight Kenyans were stranded in the northern African nation.

The rescued party comprised six Judo players, along with a Federation Treasurer and a Sports, Arts, and Social Development Fund (SASDF) officer.

CS Namwamba had previously disclosed that the government was in continual communication with the team and that preparations were already underway to facilitate their return home.

According to reports, no Kenyans have been killed in the earthquake.

On Friday night, a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 struck the Moroccan city of Marrakesh and several other towns, severely affecting mountainous regions where entire communities were reportedly destroyed.

As a result of this tragic event, King Mohammed VI of Morocco declared three days of national mourning.

President William Ruto was among the first international leaders to offer condolences to the Moroccan people.

“Kenya stands with the people of Morocco as they deal with the devastating effects of the earthquake that struck their nation Friday night,” the President stated.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected,” stated the President.
