Former Migori Deputy Governor Nelson Mahanga Dies

Former Deputy Governor of Migori County, Nelson Mahanga Mwita, passed away on September 9.

In a statement, Governor Ochillo Ayacko eulogized his deceased deputy as a great leader, affirming that his constituents are appreciative of his service and will remember him fondly.

“I am keeping you in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. My deepest empathy,” Governor Ayacko said in the statement.

The County Government of Migori separately eulogized Mahanga as a devout leader who gave his all for the advancement of society.

“With great commiseration, we register our sincere condolences to the family, friends, and the people of Migori for having lost such a useful leader,” read part of a statement published by the devolved unit.

The former politician reportedly passed away while receiving treatment in a Nairobi hospital.

The deceased’s corpse was transported to the morgue after his passing. The family is currently making funeral arrangements and will inform the residents of Migori and Kenyans in general in due time.

Mahanga was Migori’s first Deputy Governor elected on a joint platform with former Governor Okoth Obado under the new constitution.

In 2020, he assumed some county responsibilities after the High Court denied Obado access to his office.

“I would like to tell Migori residents and Kenyans that we do not have a power vacuum in Migori. The county will continue to function well and we have robust county executive committee meetings,” Mahanga stated.

Obado faced impeachment at the time, with multiple graft cases hovering over him.

The deceased was a reputable financier and marketer who maintained a low profile until Obado’s court cases became public knowledge.

He earned a Bachelor of Science in Lands Economics from the University of Nairobi, a Master of Business Administration from USIU, and a Bachelor of Science in Banking from the London Chartered Institute of Bankers.

Before entering politics, he taught and held a variety of positions at local institutions.
