Jalang’o Speaks on His Future in Azimio

Lang’ata Member of Parliament Phelix Odiwuor, also known as Jalang’o, stated that he is still a member of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) a day after being expelled from the party by its National Executive Committee (NEC).

The lawmaker was one of the five members expelled for their association with President William Ruto. Elisha Odhiambo (Gem), Caroli Omondi (Suba South), Gideon Ochanda (Bondo), and Tom Ojienda, senator from Kisumu, were the others.

The representative stated during a Radio 47 program that he had not received official communication from his party leader, Raila Odinga, and therefore would not abandon the party.

Jalang’o during an Azimio la Umoja Campaign in Nairobi County on March 20, 2022.

“Who has kicked me out of the party? ODM belongs to Raila Odinga and if I have not received communication from him then it means I’m still in ODM,” he said.

“Let me tell you this, I will be the Lang’ata MP until 2027. Take this to the bank. There are no changes that will be done.”

According to Jalang’o, he was contemplating an appeal with his attorneys but was in no rush.

“What normally happens is that when a party expels you, they write to the Speaker who declares the seat vacant and thus people go back to the ballot. This happens if you will not appeal,” he explained.

However, the first-time representative was confident that he would win a by-election in any party, should the justices rule in favor of the ODM party.

In addition, Jalang’o questioned why some party members were fined and warned while others were expelled.

“ODM knows that there’s no case. The likes of (Wiper) Kalonzo Musyoka were at State House, others were also given fines but we were expelled, Why is that?” he posed.

The ODM party took action against Kenya Kwanza government-aligned members of parliament on Wednesday.

The Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris was fined Ksh250,000 and given seven days to apologize in writing to the party.

Mark Ogolla Nyamita (Uriri) and Paul Abuor (Rongo), who were also accused of disobeying the party, were each fined Ksh1 million within sixty days.

According to ODM chairman John Mbadi, who presided over the NEC meeting, the resolutions proposed by the party’s disciplinary committee were adopted.
