Chelsea could have signed £73m winger for just £45m on deadline day but chose Cole Palmer instead

Chelsea could have signed Jadon Sancho from Manchester United for £45m on deadline day – but chose Cole Palmer instead.

That is according to the Daily Mail.

So, what was said about Jadon Sancho and Cole Palmer?

Well, it is said that Erik Ten Hag and others are Old Trafford have grown tired of the England international’s poor timekeeping and underwhelming displays in training.

As a result, Manchester United were open to selling Sancho for just £45m on deadline day – the Red Devils were happy to accept a £28m loss on their initial investment, having spent £73m to sign the winger from Borussia Dortmund in July 2021.

The Daily Mail believes Chelsea considered this opportunity but eventually decided to spend that £45m on Palmer due to concerns over the Manchester United No.25’s mindset.

Manchester United is still deciding whether to sell Sancho after the 23-year-old hit back at Ten Hag’s criticism with a firm statement, in which he effectively told people not to believe the Dutchman.

Chelsea were right to ignore Jadon Sancho

We understand why Chelsea considered signing Sancho, as he was among the best players in Europe before moving to Old Trafford.

If any club can get that version of Sancho back for a £45m fee, they’ll be laughing.

However, we can see why Chelsea decided not to take the risk.

Sancho has only scored 12 goals in 82 appearances since his £73m move to Manchester United, and he would have brought a lot of baggage to Stamford Bridge given the question marks about his attitude.

In Palmer, Mauricio Pochettino has a dedicated, committed youngster who seems determined to play regularly, having left his role as a rotation option at Manchester City to become something more at Chelsea.

Hopefully, the decision pays off for him and those on the recruitment team at Stamford Bridge.
