Ruto’s Africa Climate Summit Agenda: Day One Programme

It’s a full in-tray for President William Ruto as the much-awaited and championed Africa Climate Summit starts.

Ruto who is seen as a crusader for climate change on the global scene, will start the day at 9 a.m. with the talks being led by the Power of the Potential Panel.

The panel will consist of Ruto, AU Commission Commissioner for Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy and Sustainable Environment, youth Representatives, and National Indigenous People’s Coordinating Committee on Climate Change Anne Samanthe.

Others are Pan African Climate Justice Alliance Executive Director Mithika Mwenda and United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Executive Secretary Simon Stiell.

Kenya Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya will be the moderator for this particular session.

For eight hours, President Ruto will hold Bilateral meetings from 11 am to 7.30 pm

Some of the key people he will meet are Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, and Vice-President of Cote D’Ivoire Tiemoko Meyliet Kone among others.

After he was sworn in last year, Ruto said that climate change would be key to the government’s agenda and made an ambitious pledge to ramp up clean energy and phase out fossil fuels for electricity by 2030.

Ruto on Monday said that the African Climate Summit in Nairobi will culminate in refining the continent’s position on climate action.

In a statement, the President said this will help save lives and the entire planet from calamity.

The President in his welcome message as the summit begins on Monday said he hopes the summit will lead to a new path that will lead to sustainable development.
