Busted: Fake Deputy IG Scammers Unmasked!

National Police Service has warned the public against interacting with the multiple false accounts purporting to belong to Douglas Kanja, the Deputy Inspector General of the Kenya Police Service.

Friday, the police issued a statement on their social media platforms urging Kenyans to regard the accounts with the utmost contempt.
It also warned that the accounts were managed by impostors who intended to defraud naive Kenyans.

The police also clarified that contrary to statements posted by social media accounts, the Deputy IG was not on any social media platform.

“The existing accounts are maintained by fraudsters with the intent to defraud Kenyans who are unaware.” Please be advised that DIG-KPS has no social media accounts.” Read a portion of the assertion.

The police department stated in its statement that the accounts violated Facebook’s community guidelines.

In April of this year, President William Ruto appointed Deputy Inspector General Douglas Kanja to his position. Since 2018, Kanja has served as commandant of the General Service Unit before his appointment.

In recent years, there has been an increase in the impersonation of high-ranking government officials on social media.

The identity of Police Inspector General Japhet Koome was stolen online less than a month ago. Prompting the police service to issue a statement and warn the public against interacting with the page.

“The National Police Service wishes to caution the public against interacting with this fake account purporting to belong to the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Japhet Koome,” the Police advised.

“This account is managed by fraudsters with the intent to defraud unsuspecting Kenyans and the broader public. Please observe that the Inspector General of Police has no social media accounts,” the statement continued.

Most impersonations on social media are always intended to harm or defraud victims who are oblivious to the accounts’ credibility.
