Oparanya Clarifies EACC House Raid Discovery
Former Kakamega governor Wycliffe Oparanya disclosed on Thursday that he had Ksh2 million in his Nairobi home during the August 23 raid by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).
During a church service, the deputy party leader of the ODM stated that he had sufficient funds at home to pay the school fees for one of his children.
One of his offspring attends college in the United States, he explained, which explains the large sum.
Given that his child’s tuition was paid in foreign currency, the former governor advised him to transport the foreign currency to a bank and exchange it for dollars.
When questioned by the detectives about the money he had in his home, Oparanya indicated that he was forthcoming about the funds.
“I had 2 million Kenyan shillings for one of my children’s international travel. My child studies in the United States, and I was planning to purchase dollars,” he stated.

On the other hand, he clarified that he was not apprehended by the detectives, but rather accompanied them to Integrity House to follow up on some items they had seized.
“They seized my and my children’s phones and told me to see their supervisor if I wanted them back. When I arrived at the Integrity Center to retrieve my children’s phones, it was reported that I had been detained, according to Oparanya.
During his interrogation, he indicated that EACC officers were also interested in his business dealings with former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. Oparanya insisted they were merely political allies.
Despite the pressure to defect to President William Ruto’s camp, he characterized the raids on his residences in Nairobi and Kakamega as political and stated that he would remain with Raila.
According to the EACC, the raid on Oparanya’s residence was prompted by investigations into the alleged embezzlement of Ksh1.3 billion in county funds.
Reportedly, the funds were misappropriated during Oparanya’s 10-year tenure through his proxies.
