KPLC’s Dominant Office: Power Dispatch Decision Maker

Edwin Sifuna, a senator representing the city of Nairobi, has asserted that he has access to information regarding how the Kenya Power Lighting Company (KPLC) selectively distributes its supply of energy.

Sifuna made this claim on his X account, which was formerly known as Twitter. He stated that while he was serving as a member of the Energy Committee, he had the opportunity to learn how the electrical supplier operates a fraudulent power supply system.

“In my time as a member of the Senate Energy Committee I have come to learn of a very powerful office at KPLC called a โ€œdispatcher”. A person who has a view of all our power generation plants and decides whose power is โ€œdispatchedโ€ (added to the grid) and when,” he wrote.

The lawmaker continued by stating that there were even testimonials from cheaper green energy providers of being banned from producing energy so that the said dispatcher may choose to purchase electricity from more expensive thermal generators.

Therefore, he has claimed that he is preparing an amendment to the Energy Act to put greater light on how the dispatcher operates, saying “Hapo kuna mchezo.” The legislation is now ready to be made public.

His remarks come against the backdrop of a statewide blackout that has lasted for almost 12 hours and has also caused Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), which is Kenya’s primary airport, to temporarily close for a period of time.

As a result of the problem, Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) officers were terminated by the Cabinet Secretary for Transport, Kipchumba Murkomen.

In their defense, Kenya Power stated that the blackout occurred as a result of an issue that occurred in one of their primary power generators, which in turn caused an issue throughout the entire power infrastructure.
