After inspecting the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), which experienced a power disruption Friday night, the Transport Cabinet Secretary terminated the contract of Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) Managing Director Alex Gitari.

Murkomen addressed the media following the visit and proclaimed the mutual termination of the MD’s contract. The decision was also reached following consultations between the CS and the KAA council.

Henry Ogoye will succeed Gitari immediately in an acting capacity.
Mr. Alex Gitari’s contract as managing director of Kenya Airports Authority has been terminated by mutual agreement. In his stead, Head of Corporate Affairs Henry Ogoye has been appointed as Interim CEO,” he stated.

The CS also dismissed Fred Odawo, General Manager of Project and Engineering Services, and replaced him with Samwel Mwochache.

Abel Gogo, who previously served as the airport superintendent of JKIA, was transferred to Mombasa Airport.

The superintendent of Kisumu Airport, Selina Gor, has been transferred to JKIA to replace Gogo, effective immediately. Peter Wafula, who oversaw airport operations in Mombasa, was also transferred to Kisumu.

“Furthermore, to ensure that a similar incident does not occur again, it has been decided to immediately commission the two generators that were purchased more than two years ago.”

Murkomen announced that he had instructed the board to focus on the staff’s attitude, mentorship, and motivation to increase productivity.

In addition, the CS indicated that the board would implement additional changes in the coming days to prevent similar power outages from occurring in the future.

Following a two-hour power interruption at the international airport, these modifications have been made. While there was a nationwide outage, the airport’s backup generators failed to kick in, halting airport operations.

In addition to the modifications made at KAA, Parliament also summoned Davis Chirchir, Cabinet Secretary for Energy, and Joseph Siror, Chief Executive Officer of Kenya Power, to discuss the nationwide power outage.

The pair will appear before the National Assembly Committee on Energy to provide a detailed explanation of the outage’s causes.
