TikTok’s Kenyan Guidelines Update Post Ruto Meet

Thursday, following a virtual meeting between President William Ruto and Chief Executive Shou Zi Chew, the social media colossus TikTok pledged to remove all offensive and inappropriate content from its platform.

In a statement viewed by GossipA2Z.Com, President Ruto stated that the CEO of TikTok has pledged to ensure that content is moderated to meet community standards.

During the meeting, the CEO also disclosed that the company will establish a Kenyan office to coordinate its operations on the African continent.

“The move will ensure that content on the platform adheres to agreed-upon guidelines,” said President Ruto in a statement.

A few hours earlier, ICT Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo had ruled out the possibility of a complete prohibition on TikTok in the country.

During a Thursday interview, the Cabinet Secretary stated that the government is instead concentrating on working with the global tech behemoth to moderate the content and remove inappropriate material.

He stated, “We are not banning TikTok, but we must find a way to manage objectionable content on the platform.”

The customer service representative explained that TikTok can be a wonderful platform if the company exercises self-regulation, citing the site’s promotion of explicit and violent content as the only issue.

He added that the Kenyan government needed to listen to TikTok for the two parties to come up with a viable plan to address Kenyans’ concerns and guarantee the monetization of content uploaded by Kenyan creatives.

The meeting between President Ruto and the CEO of TikTok occurred one day after the Head of State announced his intention to meet with the social media giant’s executives to discuss monetization and content issues raised by various stakeholders.

This occurred a few weeks after a Kenyan presented a petition to the Kenyan Parliament requesting the social media platform be prohibited due to concerns about inappropriate content.

The petitioner, Bob Ndolo, argued that the social media platform promoted violence, explicit sexual content, hate speech, vulgar language, and objectionable behavior among youth.
